Safety Tips: What to do If a Gas Leak Occurs

By following these safety tips, natural gas can continue to be a safe and efficient source of energy for your home. Working with using natural gas lines and appliances is a potentially dangerous task, since natural gas is flammable.

For public safety, a sulfur-like smell similar to rotten eggs is added by the local gas company in order to alert residents to natural gas leaks. The following are safety tips that you should follow if you smell a gas leak in your home.

  1. Do not attempt to locate the leak. This should be done by a professional, who has safety equipment
  2. Do not turn any electrical appliances on or off (a spark can ignite)
  3. Do not smoke or use any open flames.
  4. Leav  the house and, from a safe distance, call the utility company and 9-1-1.

Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning from Natural Gas Appliances

Natural gas appliances give off Carbon Monoxide (CO) during operation.  The proper operation, maintenance, and ventilation of gas appliances greatly reduce the risk of CO poisoning.

Yearly inspections of these appliances and ventilations will ensure that they are working properly and ventilated safely. Installing a carbon monoxide detector (similar to a smoke detector) provides a warning system for dangerously high CO levels. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to those of the flu without a fever.

St. Croix Plumbing and Drain Cleaning can inspect appliances for proper ventilation, and repair emergency gas line leaks.
